As a production forestry company entity in Indonesia, PT Wana Bakti Persada Utama (WBPU) plays a significant role in preserving forests and sustainably utilizing natural resources. One of its initiatives involves nursery and seedling activities. This process begins with collecting seeds from high-quality parent trees and the wild. This method ensures that the resulting seedlings are stronger, healthier and capable of thriving in diverse environments.
Collecting high-quality seeds from trees is done selectively. PT WBPU’s expert team selected trees with superior genetic characteristics, such as disease resistance and the ability to grow faster. The seeds collected are then sorted and processed to produce seeds ready for sowing. Collecting seeds directly from nature is done carefully to ensure that the original ecosystem is not disturbed and the tree population is maintained.
The tree species prioritized in this nursery activity include meranti (Shorea) and camphor trees (Dryobalanops aromatica). Meranti timber is known for its high economic value and is used extensively in the timber industry. Meanwhile, camphor trees offer significant ecological and economic benefits. These two types of trees were chosen due to their important environmental and economic value, making their cultivation and care the company's main focus.
Apart from supporting forest sustainability, PT WBPU also runs a Corporate Social Responsibility program focused on empowering local communities. One of the initiatives involves providing cocoa and other plantation seedlings to the community from the company nursery. This program aims to improve community welfare by providing an additional source of income through plantation activities.
Besides providing the community with seeds, PT WBPU offers technical training. The training includes planting techniques, plant care and effective harvesting methods. Consequently, the community receives not only seeds but also the necessary knowledge to manage plantations productively and sustainably. This training program is expected to improve the community's skills and expertise, enabling them to manage their plantations independently.
In the future, PT WBPU plans to continue to expand its nursery activities and Corporate Social Responsibility programs. These efforts aim to preserve forests and enhance community welfare. With a strong commitment to the principles of sustainability and empowerment, PT WBPU strives to create a better future for the environment and society.
