On November 5, 2024, the atmosphere in Kampung Suaran, Berau Regency, was more lively than usual. Cocoa farmers from three villages in Hulu Sungai Kelay Long Lamcin, Long Pelay, and Long Keluh gathered to participate in a study visit on cocoa cultivation. With a strong eagerness to learn, these farmers convened at the village hall of Kampung Suaran, ready to absorb the knowledge shared during the program. The initiative aimed to enhance their understanding of effective and sustainable cocoa farming practices, with hopes of improving their harvest and the quality of cocoa beans in their respective villages.
The first day of the study visit began with an opening speech by Arif Sugiarto, the Head of Kampung Suaran. In his remarks, Arif expressed his hope that this event would inspire the farmers to adopt more modern techniques in cocoa cultivation. After the opening session, the participants attended presentations covering various aspects of cocoa farming. Topics included planting techniques, young tree care, maintenance for fruit-bearing trees, and care for mature, productive trees. Additionally, they learned proper harvesting methods and cocoa bean fermentation techniques to enhance product quality.
Following the presentation, the participants were taken directly to local residents' cocoa farms for hands-on practice. They learned how to plant cocoa seedlings properly and perform maintenance for young trees, such as precise pruning and the application of organic fertilizers. This practical experience was met with great enthusiasm as it provided valuable hands-on insights for the farmers.
On the second day, the activities focused on tree grafting techniques, a method to produce superior cocoa varieties. The participants also learned about proper cocoa bean fermentation and drying processes to ensure high-quality beans. These processes are critical, as optimal fermentation can enhance the flavor of cocoa and its market value.
In addition to the practical sessions, representatives from Berau Kakao, a cocoa bean purchasing company, provided additional materials. During their presentation, they explained the criteria for well-fermented and properly dried cocoa beans. This knowledge broadened the farmers' understanding of the importance of maintaining bean quality to fetch higher prices. They were also shown examples of high-quality cocoa beans as a benchmark.
Direct interactions with Berau Kakao representatives gave the farmers deeper insights into the relationship between product quality and market opportunities. The participants felt more confident in improving their production standards to achieve better selling prices.
At the end of the program, participants shared their impressions and feedback. Leni, a cocoa farmer from Kampung Long Keluh, expressed that this program opened her eyes to the importance of more intensive cocoa tree care. "I never realized how much fermentation and drying processes could influence the selling price. I will immediately apply this knowledge to my farm," she said enthusiastically.
Meanwhile, Alexius from Kampung Long Pelay expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the event. "This program provided us with new knowledge, especially about cocoa tree grafting. I am confident that with this technique, we can improve our farm yields," he said. He also appreciated the warm hospitality of the Kampung Suaran residents who were very helpful throughout the program.
This study visit marks an important first step in advancing the cocoa sector in Hulu Sungai Kelay. With a strong spirit of learning and hard work, the farmers are optimistic about applying the knowledge they have gained to improve their cocoa yields and enhance their livelihoods in the future.
