The Importance of Flora Diversity in PT WBPU

PT Wana Bakti Persada Utama (WBPU) carried out inventory data updating activities related to biodiversity in the company's concession area located in the Wehea Kelay Landscape in September 2023. One of the important points of this research is about the diversity of flora in this area.

Together with the National Innovation Research Agency (BRIN) for Ecology and Ethnobiology Research, they recorded that there are around 321 types of forest plants, 102 (32%) of which are orangutan food trees.

Young Researcher at the BRIN Ecology and Ethnobiology Research Center, Bina swasta Sitepu, who was present as a researcher in the activity of updating inventory data related to biodiversity in the PT WBPU concession area, explained that this concession area was still in the good category where the flora diversity within it was not seriously disturbed.

"This is proven by the existence of meranti tree species (shorea) which are typical lowland plants on the island of Kalimantan. It is hoped that this activity will provide a record of the standing inventory before logging. In this way, in the future we can determine which areas within the concession area are not suitable for production due to low logging potential, and we can protect these areas," explained Bina swasta Sitepu.

Flora diversity in production forests has an important role that should not be ignored. The following are several reasons why flora diversity in production forest areas is very important.

  1. Ecosystem Balance: Each plant species in a production forest has its own role in maintaining ecosystem balance. Some plants may act as primary producers in the food chain, while others may provide shelter for small animals or maintain soil quality by absorbing water and nutrients. The diversity of flora ensures that all these roles are fulfilled properly, so that the ecosystem remains stable and sustainable.
  2. Forest Health: Flora diversity also contributes to overall forest health. With the presence of various types of plants, production forests become more resistant to pest and disease attacks. If there are only a few dominant plant species, the risk of disease outbreaks or pest attacks can increase significantly.
  3. Genetic Diversity: Each plant species has many different genetic varieties. This genetic diversity allows for better adaptation to environmental changes, including changes in climate, soil, and weather. With the existence of various genetic varieties, plants can evolve and adapt to survive in a changing environment.
  4. Economic Benefits: The diversity of flora in production forests also provides significant economic benefits. Various types of wood and non-timber forest products such as fruit, spices and medicinal plants can be produced from various existing plant species. By wisely utilizing this floral diversity, production forests can become a sustainable source of income for local communities and the country as a whole.

By understanding the importance of flora diversity in production forest areas, we can better appreciate and protect the existing biodiversity. Protection of production forests and appropriate flora conservation efforts are long-term investments for human welfare and environmental sustainability.
